My name is Dallin and I hate waste. Tossing stuff in the trash drives me crazy, and while I try to shop small for reusable stuff whenever possible, modern commerce wages a battle I just can't win. On one particular day, I opened my mailbox to pile of junk mail so huge that a fuse in my brain just sort of... popped.

That was it. I went to the dollar store, bought a 9" x 13" baking pan, some wire mesh, and a bottle of caulk to build a deckle. Using my NutriBullet, I destroyed all my junk mail with delight.

Was my first deckle pretty? No. All that chunky caulk made it impossible to get nice, sleek, smooth pieces of normal-sized paper. Instead, my creations were unwieldy and clunky, but I didn't care.

I had paper for greeting cards and paintings, and my friends loved it. Making my own paper was a hit, but as I neared the end of my (then current) journal, I knew I had to do better. 9" x 13" journals really sucked to write in.

How Do I Make Em?

I bought a better paper mold, designed and ordered some paper from The Paper Mill Printers, acquired some essential book binding equipment with help from a friend, and made my first notebook.

Practice makes perfect. Great notebook covers come from cool newsprint, just a touch of blending, aggressive pouring, hand pressing, and a few hours in the oven at 325°F (or a day out in the sun).

Scrap Paper notebooks are beautiful, unique and tough. Paper flakes off the covers over time, but the binding is strong. And hey, that's the price you pay for setting yourself apart from the leatherbound folk.
